To Absent-Minded Friends
April 19, 2003

by Johnny Ioannidis

What did you leave in your wake?
An odyssey cut short, all for the sake

of some cheap thrills....
and countless spills....

How many promises would you break?

Time was your buddy, your ever-present ally.
And money; better than any alibi

Meant to mingle,
all summer single,

Where the limit was the bowery or the sky

How easily you could throw away
A love that, some would say,

Was truly infinite
if only for a minute

You robbed the sun of its every ray.

Alas, the trail is now cold.
All that you owned, easily sold.

A few memories may remain,
But there, in the back of your brain

You'll not forget a girl worth your soul in gold.
