Education Page

Welcome to the Education page of the Pweb!

The main focus of the education pages will be on language teaching and learning, specifically English and Korean.  As the creator of these pages is a bit of a novice, he has to ask you to bear with him through the inevitable growing pains.  You may be seeing some broken links and strange happenings until things become smoother.

 Thanks for your patience!

For some reason, this page has become the place to post stray comments and questions on Pusanweb.  Please post discussion topics in the Forums, ads in The Classifieds, and event listings on the Calendar.  (sections currently require separate logins). We will be activating some significant renovations early in 2009 that will hopefully clear up some of this posting confusion.

In the meantime,  for posts that don't fit into any of the above categories,  this page can continue to serve as a grafitti wall (but posting policies still apply)

Kaplan or Princeton Review. Can such be found in Busan? Resources are available at bookstores, but what of formal classes or even study groups?

You will have a great experience and spend your money slowly. You find out that the Guatemaltecos are unique people. Check this site out if this sounds interesting to you. It's a Spanish school that I highly recommend run by two Guatemalteco single mothers. http://www.spanishschoolelportal.com/

Hi Everyone, Does anybody have suggestions for a good Korean program in Pusan? I will be moving to the Seomyeon area in May and want to start language lessons. I see KLIFF advertised here. Has anyone experienced one of their courses or heard any opinions on their courses? Does anyone know of a university that offers intensive programs on par with the programs run by Yonsei in Seoul? I have taken classes before, but they are always simply grammar translation and repeat the sentence after the instructor with little if no explanation as to how the structure can be utilized effectively or manipulated in a practical sense. Thanks for any help you can provide. Best to all, Mayosean

From my experience at KLIFF, I would say it is more than just a regurgitation of vocabulary and phrases. The students are encouraged to utilize the material that is learned in discussions about their Korean life. Slang and cultural differences also seem to have a reoccurring role in the curriculum. With regards to an intensive program such as Yonsei in Seoul, I can't help you with that. I do know that KLIFF offers an abundance of classes and private lessons that are taken advantage of frequently by foreign business people and university students to create their own 'intensive' course. Those who are learning while teaching/working usually take 2 to 3 classes a week but one could easily do it every day or add a private lesson to the regular schedule to create their own ideal learning situation. I hope this helps, but you can always send an email off to KLIFF via the website to get some more detailed information about what they can do for you once you get to Busan. ~Sim

Could anybody please help me find info on how to get to and around Fukuoka regarding getting one's working visa, please? I used to teach English in Gumi for a few years and am now back in my own country placing candidates in teaching positions in Korea as I'm also a Recruitment Consultant. When I had to do the visa run, I found a site with all the information plus photo guide but have forgotten where to find it now. I urgently need it for one of my candidates that need to do the Busan-Fukuoka visa run. Thanks so much guys.

You can find some info here: http://www.pusanweb.com/guides/fukuoka/index.htm It's a bit out of date, but hopefully will be of some use. You can also find a number of Fukuoka related threads by searching the Koreabridge Forums http://koreabridge.com/forums/ A few are below: http://www.koreabridge.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5544 http://www.koreabridge.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2842 http://www.koreabridge.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2917

MY goal is to make everyone's experience in South Korea a positive one. And mine was despite the bad hagwon. Please contribute your horror schools on facebook at HAGWON BLACKLIST. let's prevent others from going through what we went through.

where and how do i submit to this?  i have had a bad experience and i want to do what is necessary to discredit the owner and the school in every way possible.  i don't want other Americans to deal with this s*%t....

What is the website name? <school name omitted> was my first experience. It was horrid The owner didn't pay me forever. I had to get the police involved. He eventually did in two installments almost two months later.

You'll need to register at Facebook.com and join the Hagwon Blacklist group.

For legal and headache avoidance reasons, Pusanweb has alwasy avoided 'naminng names' when it comes to blacklists, but we're glad to do whatever we can to help folks find the information they're looking for.
For discussing job related issues without naming names, you can also try the JobForums at:

OLD ST. NICK OF YE OL' BUSAN
by Timothy Joseph Murphy

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS AND ALL THROUGH BUSAN

NOT A WEIGOOK WAS SOBER FROM JANGSAN TO HADAN

STOCKINGS WERE HUNG IN PROSTY ALLEY WITH CARE

ALL THE THURSDAY PARTYS WERE PUMPIN KANYE- WE DON'T DARE

WON'T BE ANY SNOW,  BUT THAT'S ALRIGHT

DAMNED IF OUR CHRISTMAS SPIRIT WILL BE TAKEN WITHOUT A FIGHT

I SEE SANTAS LITTLE ELVES AND MAGIC CHRISTMAS PIXIES

AH DAMN, I'VE GOT TOO MUCH SOJU IN MY NOG MESSIN WITH ME

KOREAN VERSION OF A CHRISTMAS STORY

IS HOW SOME GUY DIED PLAYING STARCRAFT IN A DORMATORY

WITH HIS HANDS ON THE KEYBOARD AND A SMILE ON HIS FACE

TRANSLATES INTO "THAT HUGE LEG LAMP'S GOT NO TASTE"

THE LADS AND LASSES WERE NUZZLED IN THE UNDERGROUND VINYL

WHISLT VISIONS OF PICKIN UP WERE IN THERE HEADS ALL THE WHILE

ADJUMA AND ADJESHI CLAUS WERE WELL ON THEIR WAY

TOO MUCH DOG MEAT SO NOTHING COULD KEEP SANTAS SEX DRIVE AT BAY

WHEN OUT NEAR AN OPEN SEWER THERE AROSE SUCH A CLATTER

SANTA SAID  "SCREW IT" HE DIDN'T CARE WHAT WAS THE MATTER

BUT AWAY TO A WINDOW I FLEW LIKE A BANSHEE

TO MY SURPRISE I FOUND A HAND FULL OF ADJESHI

I SAW MR KIM, MR KIM, MR, KIM, AND MR. PARK

THEY WERE ALL SINGING CHRISTMAS CAROLS IN THE DARK

BEYOND ALL THE BANGING AND NORAE BANGING

I HEARD A FAINT TINKLE OR TRINKLE OR CLANGING

WHEN WHAT TO MY WONDERING EYES SHOULD APPEAR

BUT A BROKE DOWN CASS TRUCK AND AT LEAST 200 BEER

WITH A LITTLE OLD DRIVER SO STICKY AND QUICK

HIS KOREAN NAME EE DAE , HIS ENGLISH NAME NICK

HE WAS SITTING THERE SMASHED, JUST LIKE HIS VAN

IN MY BEST KONGLISH I SAID "LET'ME GIV YA A HAND"

HE DAMNED IT AND SLAMMED IT, AND "ASSSHHH'D" IT SOME MORE

HIS VAN  TOTALED, BECAME OUR CHRISTMAS SCORE

HE SAID "CALL YOUR FRIENDS THAT COULD FIT HERE TO THE WALL"

"ALL THE BEER THEY WANT, GOD SPEED TELL THEM ALL"

AND CAME THEY DID, FROM SINPYEONG TO NOPO

A RED AND BLUE SLEIGH INFRONT WAS THE POPO

GUIDING THEM ALL TO THE CENTER OF TOWN

TONIGHT WAS THE NIGHT DRIVER NICK WOULD BE CROWNED

OLD ST. NICK OF YE OL' BUSAN

HE KEPT US UP PAST THE BREAK OF DAWN

SO IN THE LAND OF THE EVER RISING SOJ

HIGH FIVE YOUR KIDS AND HALF THEIR  WORK LOAD

RAISE YOUR GLASSES, FLAUGNT A SMILE, AND DRINK YOUR HITE

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOODNIGHT
