“Teacher! Teacher!†by Alex Major
Old lady thugs, teacher-molesting kids, bad manners and worse fashion – this is just a little bit of the weirdness you meet on a daily basis in Korea. “Teacher! Teacher!†is a book about living here as an expat English teacher, and all the weirdness that entails.
You probably know someone – maybe even yourself – who taught, teaches or will teach here. To English-speaking, university-educated, under-employed 20-somethings, “Korea†means “money.†We came to Korea with dollar bills in our eyes and dreams of… well, I don’t really know. Fact is, not many of us knew what we were getting ourselves into.
Life as an expat can be surreal. It’s baffling and there’s comedy (often unintended) at every turn. Sometimes here, people see you as a gorilla riding a bicycle: a target for laughter or derision. Others love you. Others ignore you.
So, I wrote this book…
Because you drank so much Cass and soju, you can’t remember it yourself…
Because your friends over here are having trouble explaining it to you...
Because you want to know what your kids are up to during their year here…
Because you’ll want to know you’re getting into when you get sick of the 9-5, pack it in and head to the Land of the Morning Calm-- and kimchi, and dubious teaching, and snot-nosed brats who are actually slapstick geniuses…
Because, for all the hair I pulled out along the way, Korea will always have a special place in my heart.
